ASNT NDT Level II

It is recognized that the effectiveness of non-destructive testing (NDT) applications depends upon the capabilities of the personnel who perform NDT. The ASNT Level II program provides third-party examinations for NDT personnel whose specific jobs require appropriate knowledge of the NDT method(s) for which certification is sought. Certification under this system results in the issuance of an ASNT certificate attesting that the certificate holder has successfully completed ASNT Level II General and Specific examinations in the NDT method(s) and industry sectors, if applicable, for which certification is sought

Certification Outcome

Personnel that successfully complete the examination requirements will be issued an ASNT Level II certificate attesting to that fact. The certificate shall show the test method(s) and industrial sector(s), as applicable, covered by this certification.

Eligibility

ASNT has no restrictions relative to the gender, creed, race or nationality of applicants. Applicants shall document the combination of education and experience in accordance with the Level II guidelines published in Recommended Practice No. SNT-TC-1A. The Candidate shall agree to abide by the code of ethics for ASNT Level II personnel

Examination Descriptions

As per ASNT recommended practice SNT-TC-1A, the candidates for Level I, II certification programs should appear for the following examinations separately for each NDT method after completing the training course.

General: Covers the basic principles, theory, applications of the specific NDT method This written examination consists of a minimum of 50 multiple-choice questions that assess the candidate’s knowledge of the fundamentals, theory and principles of the test method for which certification is sought.

Specific: Tests ability to read, interpret and apply specific procedure, code, specification for the method. These written examinations consist of a minimum of 40 multiple-choice questions that assess the candidate’s knowledge of equipment, operating procedures, and NDT techniques that the individual may encounter during specific assignments in the NDT method(s) in which certification is sought; and covers specifications, codes and acceptance criteria used in the applicable industry sector.

Practical: Hands-on demonstration of the ability to operate test equipment, perform specific calibrations and tests in order to find and report flaws of sample materials according to appropriate specifications or procedures and instructions. This examination assesses the candidate’s ability to perform NDT in each applicable test technique on a minimum of two (2) approved test specimens. The specimens and areas of interest shall contain actual or artificially induced discontinuities representing those discontinuities found in the product type and Industry Sector for which certification is sought. Candidates must locate, interpret and evaluate discontinuities and shall properly document test results. The practical examination shall also require that the candidate prepare a written work instruction or technique sheet sufficient to permit a third party to recreate or duplicate the examination in question.

Industry Specific examinations: If Industry Specific examinations are used, the certification documentation shall clearly indicate the industry sector and limitations for which certification has been granted.

Training Methodology: The examinations are administered by an NDT Level III examiner. The candidate qualification result in a passing composite grade of at least 80 percent with no individual examination having a pass grade of less than 70 percent. Successful candidates will be awarded the certificates in the method certified within 10 working days after evaluating the examination result.
